Behaviour policy

Behaviour Policy (including Anti-Bullying Policy)

RATIONALE

School is a safe, friendly, caring environment where all are encouraged to develop independence and social responsibility supported by positive images of good behaviour. Children need to develop confidence and grow in self-esteem enabling them to develop a responsible attitude which shows respect for the feelings of others and for the environment.

PURPOSES

·                     To promote a community based on shared values reflecting the vision and aims of the school.

·                     To raise awareness of appropriate behaviour among all staff, children and parents.

·                     To achieve consistency throughout the whole school when dealing with children’s behaviour.

·                     To encourage the development of self-esteem and taking responsibility for one’s actions.

·                     To develop awareness and understanding of the wider community and the wider world and the part we can play in supporting and helping.

·                     To keep parents informed of good behaviour as well as behaviour causing concern.

·                     To celebrate success and achievement.

GUIDELINES

1.                    All staff will take responsibility for children’s behaviour throughout the school.

2.                   All children will know the limits and boundaries and these will be clear to the children, staff and parents.

3.         The children will try to:

Understand other people’s point of view.

Make it as easy as possible for everyone to learn and for the teacher to teach.  This means listening carefully, following instructions, helping each other when appropriate and being quiet and sensible at all times.

Move quietly about the school.  This means not running but being ready to help by carrying things, opening doors or standing to one side to let people through.

Speak politely to everyone and use a quiet voice.

Keep the school clean and tidy so it is a welcoming place we can all be proud of.  This means looking after our belongings, putting litter in bins, keeping walls and furniture unmarked and taking a pride in our own work and in other peoples.

Make visitors welcome to our school.

 A Positive Approach

  1.  Good behaviour will be promoted by good relationships.  Good work and good behaviour will have equal weight and good manners will be encouraged.  Positive behaviour will be supported and encouraged through the P.H.S.E. policy, R.E. policy and the Collective Worship policy and will include Circle Time and Star of the Week assemblies where good work and kind deeds are celebrated and rewarded.

  2. Parental Involvement Parents will agree to support their children and the school by signing the Home School Agreement.  Parents will be informed of any concern about behaviour and involved in any action plan to support the child.  Parents will also be informed of good behaviour.

  3.  school Rules rules exist to ensure the safety and well being of the children and the school community.  At the beginning of each school year the rules will be discussed with the children and those considered by the children to be most important will be displayed in the hall.  Children will be encouraged to discuss the school rules at home and sign the Home School Agreement. Each class will have their own classroom charter which will be signed by the children and staff.

  4.  In the Playground  Children will play co-operatively and with consideration for others in the playground.  Apparatus used at playtime will be played with appropriately and for the purpose it was designed for.  Toys including guns or games likely to promote violent play will not be allowed.   Children in Year 2 will take it in turns to be the Playground Buddies of the week. They will blow the whistle, be responsible for putting out and putting away the toys at playtime and lunchtime.  They will look after children who need help.

  5.  At Lunchtime – see also Health and Safety Policy The children will be supervised by the lunchtime assistants who will record incidents and report any behaviour problems to the class teacher and Headteacher as appropriate.  Good manners will be promoted during mealtimes and  a star award certificate presented weekly to reward this behaviour The children will be supervised by the lunchtime assistants who will record incidents and report any behaviour problems to the class teacher and Headteacher as appropriate.  Good manners will be promoted during mealtimes and  a star award certificate presented weekly to reward this behaviour.

  6. On the Bus – see also Health and Safety Policy. The designated adult will ensure seat belts are fastened and remind the children of behaviour on the bus.

  7. Offsite Activities Children will be expected to have as they would in school, showing respect for property and adults.

  8. Behaviour Strategies   Good relationships between children and staff are the key to good behaviour management. Ifchildren have difficulty in conforming to the school’s Code of Conduct the following strategies can be employed:All classrooms will operate a system where there is a sunshine, a sunshine covered partly by a cloud and a cloud with only a small amount of sunshine showing.  This system will also be used in the corridor to promote positive play at playtimes and lunchtimes.

All children will have a peg with their name on which is placed on the sunshine in their classroom. If a child misbehaves they will be given a verbal reminder of the behaviour we would prefer to see.If a child continues to misbehave they will 'move their peg'. The child will physically move their peg from the sunshine down to the sunshine partly covered by a cloud. If their behaviour improves they can move it back on to the sunshine again. Conversely, if their behaviour does not change they would move their peg down on to the cloud with a small amount of sunshine and they will miss a playtime. If a child regularly misbehaves or exhibits inappropriate behaviour, parents will be informed. Each class will have another level above the sunshine as an incentive for children who demonstrate good behaviour, for example a rainbow. Children who are on the rainbow will be rewarded with praise and for example may go to lunch first, choose first et

  9.  Behaviour Difficulties.  If a child has persistent difficulties in conforming to the school’s expectations for good behaviour, parents will be informed and an individual action plan will be implemented, usually a system which reinforces good behaviour. Appropriate behaviour will therefore be rewarded frequently, reinforced and overtly praised, no matter how infrequent this behaviour is seen. The rewards will suit the interests of the child and be negotiated as part of a behaviour contract.

  10.  Behaviour Chart  A behaviour chart may be established if an individual’s behaviour needs to be rewarded. The behaviour will set out the negotiated rules and conditions of what constitutes a reward. It will also list the sanctions imposed for poor behaviour.

  11. Involvement of Outside Agencies   Children with behaviour difficulties which cause continued concern will be assessed according to the S.E.N. Code of Practice and if it is appropriate, advice will be sought from outside agencies.  A behaviour log and an individual Behaviour Management Plan (BMP) will be implemented.

  12. The school will promote a policy of inclusion but in extreme circumstances the Headteacher may have to consider the possibility of exclusion in the interests of safety and the well being of all children and staff.

  13.  Exclusion When possible parents will be made aware of the possible consequences of their children’s continued poor behaviour including exclusion and some or all of the following actions may have been taken over a period of time;    Pupil has been advised of concerns about behaviour, positive strategies have been employed to improve behaviour, School has written to parents expressing concern, parents have been invited in to discuss problems as they arise the school has involved outside agencies

  • In certain circumstances the Headteacher may have to make a decision to exclude a child for unacceptable behaviour without warning due to the interest of safety and the well being of all children and staff.
  •  Only the Headteacher can make the decision to exclude a pupil.  The National Standards list of reasons for exclusions (appendix 2) will be used when making the decision to exclude.
  •  If the Headteacher is out of school, the teacher who witnesses an incident will send a letter to the child’s parents outlining what their child has done and allocate them a time to come in to school to discuss the behaviour with the Headteacher who will then exclude the pupil if necessary.
  •  Copies of all correspondence to parents will be stored in the children’s SEN files or files in the office if a child is not on the SEN register.

17.   After School Activities

If a child has persistent difficulties in conforming to the school’s expectations for good behaviour or the children’s safety or well being is being compromised then the Headteacher may decide to exclude a pupil from an activity.

18.  Bullying

Bullying either verbal or physical will not be tolerated and children and parents will be positively encouraged to inform staff of their concerns.  All concerns will be investigated and monitored and appropriate action taken.  All concerns will be reported to the Headteacher on the same day.

19.  Positive Rewards for Good Work and Behaviour

Praise and badges from the class teacher

Child sent to show/tell Headteacher for praise and a badge

Celebration Assembly - Stars of the Week from Class teachers and Lunchtime Supervisor

End of Term Certificates

Playtime Award Chart

20.  Emotional Literacy Support Children identified as needing Emotional Literacy Support may be referred to work with the ELSA in school on a programme of support.

21.   Attendance and Punctuality  Attendance including unauthorised absences and punctuality will be monitored.  Parents will be asked to give a reason for absence on the first day.  If no message is sent giving a reason for absence the school will make contact with the parents to find out the reason for absence.  If there is a problem the Headteacher will discuss this with the parents and if necessary the Educational Welfare Officer will be involved.
