Our History

Newtown Soberton Infant School was established in 1851 in the village of Newtown in the Meon Valley. Since that time it has met the educational needs of the local community and contributed to the life of the village and the surrounding area and is now a small infant  school. In 2001 we celebrated the school's 150th anniversary. During 2001, a building project was completed and the old building refurbished combining the old and the new.

In October 2006 we completed another exciting building project which included our fabulous new hall, a new library and new premises within the school for Earlybirds pre-school.

Our School now

We have around sixty one children on roll, aged between four and seven years. Our teacher to pupil ratio is excellent and all classes have additional support. We aim to provide each of our children, whatever their needs, with a secure start to school life which will provide a solid foundation for their future. We offer a wide range of learning situations and our standards are high. We ensure all our children's entitlement to the National curriculum providing a good range of resources including ICT and we offer extra curricular activities.

We are small enough to have excellent communications between home and school and aim to make all feel welcome. We have a strong family atmosphere within a caring environment and value close contact with parents, believing that a child's education is the shared responsibility between school and home.

Community Links

Although our catchment area is scattered we value opportunities to be involved in the local community. We work in partnership with Earlybirds Pre-School on our school site and with First Steps Under -Fives Group. We welcome suggestions to enable us to strengthen the traditional values of the village school whilst ensuring we meet the educational needs and foster the life skills necessary for children in the twenty-first century.

Church Affiliation Partnership

In November 07 the school entered into a Partnership Agreement with Holy Trinity Church Newtown and the Dioceses of Winchester and Portsmouth. The school has always had strong links with the Church and the local Vicar regularly visits the school. The children also visit the church to celebrate festivals.
